Best of Golden Globes Nominations?

Greta Gerwig in Frances Ha

Greta Gerwig.

Her mom chokes up. And, here, Guy Lodge’s take on her nomination:

The lovably dorky hipster princess had a rough start to the awards season: her delightful turn in the springtime critics’ favorite “Frances Ha” was never going to be a heavyweight contender, but when she was passed over by the Gotham Awards and even the Indie Spirit voters (who actually nominated the Gerwig-dominated film for Best Picture), her many admirers cried foul. Few really expected the HFPA to right this wrong: black-and-white micro-indies aren’t generally their cup of tea, and Gerwig isn’t yet the kind of mainstream star they’ll nominate just to secure her presence at the show. But the performance, it seems, was just too darn beguiling to be ignored; this is the kind of fresh, inspired and genuinely comic work that is recognized all too rarely in the comedy categories.
